The United States has the greatest economic disparity of all industrial countries. The Bush administration has made it nearly impossible for workers to form unions. Less than a quarter of Americans believe the next generation will be better off. More than 46 million Americans lack health insurance, even as we spend far more on health care than other developed nations. Present tax policies privilege the wealthy over working families and the poor. The corrupting influence of money in politics undermines our democracy, feeds cynicism, and results in public policies that serve special interests and not the common good.
We need a universal, single-payer comprehensive health care system with a focus on prevention. It will provide security to our families and improve the competitive position of U.S. companies. We need to strengthen worker rights by passing the Employee Free Choice Act, and make the minimum wage a living wage. We must repeal the Bush administration’s tax cuts to the richest five percent and use the money to meet health, education and environmental needs. We need to strengthen social security by subjecting all income to the social security tax. We need publicly financed elections and paper ballot trails to ensure the integrity of our democracy.
Americans are ready to make the changes necessary to reverse the growing insecurity that has come from years of Bush-Coleman policies. Americans are ready to make the changes necessary to realize the promises of our democracy.
